Novasep will build the world's largest chromatography plant for drug development in the French town of Mourenx.

Announcing its plans, the life sciences manufacturer said it would put 30 million euros into developing the facility, which will be used for large volume commercial active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

The company intends to have the site operational within just 18 months and is building the lab to meet the growing demand from pharmaceuticals for highly-purified APIs used in drug development.

Patrick Glaser, president and chief executive of the company, said that the more complex nature of new drugs means more advanced manufacturing capabilities are required.

He said: "This successful project, the world's largest chromatography plant in the pharmaceutical industry, demonstrates the validity of the Novasep strategy, which is based on the combination of synthesis, biosynthesis and purification."

Novasep has developed chromatography solutions for pharmaceutical manufacturing over the past two decades and will use its Varicol continuous chromatography technologies for commercial scale production at the new site.
