Many patients fail to adhere to their treatment regimes, losing national health care industries billions of pounds every year.
A new report by Cutting Edge Information claims that one of the best ways to tackle the problem of patient non-adherence is to adopt a more patient-centric approach.
The research firm suggests that pharmaceutical companies should stop looking at patients merely as statistics and instead attempt to embrace their needs and goals.
"Ultimately, to realise success companies must move beyond cookie cutter adherence tactics," said project leader Michelle Vitko.
"Organisations that embrace patient-centric thinking better position themselves to reach their programme goals by treating consumers as critical customers and responding to their unique needs."
Cutting Edge Information noted that some companies already have patient programmes in place that are tailored towards individual patient groups and help to build relationships with consumers.
This in turn helps to highlight their goals and may help to improve patient adherence, rather than simply instructing patients to follow a course of treatment.
