The UK Government has announced five-year funding worth £800m for research into diagnosis, prevention and treatment, the nation's largest-ever investment into early-stage health research.
The investment will be used to develop partnerships between the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and universities through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in order to provide new facilities for the NHS itself and develop the UK's science and research base.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said, "A strong competitive science and research base is a crucial part of securing sustainable economic growth and creating jobs of the future, and we have some of the best scientists and facilities in the world."
Included in the investment is four new biomedical research units, specialising in research into the treatment of dementia, and further research into cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
The investment comes as part of a £4bn investment into research and development within the nation, expected to develop new treatments that can be used across the NHS.
